Orchards History

In the late 1960's and early 1970's, the Kalathas family came to the USA from Greece. Their goal was to establish themselves in the restaurant business. Tom and Charlie worked for their uncle at the Texas Lunch restaurant in downtown Chambersburg until 1972 when they purchased the business. Soon after, they purchased an apartment building next door to expand the seating. This became The New Texas Lunch and The Texas Inn to accommodate large parties. As the years rolled by and with their reputation and restaurant growing, they found a continuing demand for their business.

In 1995, they decided to establish another restaurant and the building site would be what was formerly an area farmed as apple orchards. This restaurant would not only satisfy requests for more and larger banquets, but would allow them to diversify into a fine dining facility called, The Orchards Restaurant.

Today, the Orchard's dining room has a seating capacity of 160 people. The six private party rooms located behind the dining room accommodate six to thirty-five people. while the ballroom seats up to 400 people and can be broken down into three smaller rooms, each seating up to 130 people. The 75-seat cocktail lounge is used frequently by dining patrons because of its warm and casual atmosphere.

Most recently, in January 2001, another generation assumed the responsibility and fine tradition of the Orchards Restaurant. Mike who is the son of Charlie Kalathas and Nick and Charles who are the sons of Tom Kalathas, are all graduates of The Culinary Institute of America, one of the finest culinary institutes in the United States. From generation to generation, the legacy of the Kalathas family has found its way to this fine restaurant. That legacy is to welcome patrons from all walks of life while providing the quality of food they expect with the outstanding service they deserve.
